UrbanAIR is a digital twin project supporting urban decision-makers in addressing climate change and environmental hazards. By integrating high-resolution atmospheric models with behavioural simulations, UrbanAIR delivers actionable insights to improve air quality, manage heat stress, and enhance public health.

Part of the European Commission’s Destination Earth initiative, UrbanAIR translates scientific data into practical tools, empowering municipalities and industries to:

  • Support cities in adapting to climate change.
  • Mitigate risks from extreme events such as heat waves and pollution.
  • Enhance blue-green infrastructure for sustainable urban development.

Future Needs’ Role in UrbanAIR

Future Needs plays a key role in establishing UrbanAIR’s brand, visibility, and long-term impact. Our responsibilities include:

  • Branding and visual identity: Delivering a consistent and professional image for UrbanAIR through custom visual materials and communication strategies.
  • Dissemination and communication: Sharing project outcomes with industry leaders, policymakers, and academia through dedicated campaigns and platforms.

Exploitation activities: Managing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), developing business plans, and presenting at international conferences to maximise UrbanAIR’s scalability and funding potential.

Project Ambition

UrbanAIR advances urban planning with tools for high-resolution atmospheric modelling and informed decision-making. It focuses on:

  1. Advanced Decision Support for Urban Planners
Tools that evaluate socio-economic and environmental impacts using co-creation methods and quantified uncertainties.
  2. Integrated Atmospheric Models
A unified digital twin platform combining high- and low-fidelity models for accurate urban simulations.
  3. AI-Driven Efficiency
AI and multi-fidelity strategies to reduce computational costs while maintaining precision.
  4. Enhanced Forecasting and Risk Assessment
Uncertainty quantification at small urban scales to improve forecasting and guide local measurement campaigns.

Behavioural Modelling for Liveability
Citizen-driven behavioural models to align urban planning with community needs and climate goals.

UrbanAIR Use Cases

UrbanAIR demonstrates its digital twin framework through two key use cases:

  1. Action Cities (Barcelona and Antwerp)
  • Develop and test the digital twin prototype with local stakeholders.
  • Address challenges such as air quality, heat stress, and urban resilience.
  1. Learning Cities (Paris, Rotterdam, and Bristol)
  • Validate scalability in diverse environments.
  • Refine tools based on real-world feedback.

These use cases showcase UrbanAIR’s readiness to support urban planning and expand its impact to other municipalities.
